Just when you thought you couldn’t do anything more with a jacket, along comes JakPak – a jacket which turns into a tent. Campers around the world have lauded the JakPak since its launch at the start of this month, but we at the e-Travel Blackboard team find it slightly reminiscent of a body bag. Invented by the Americans (who else!) and costing a whopping US$249.99, the JakPak is a waterproof breathable jacket with an integrated tent, mosquito netting and sleeping bag. Trekkers, mountain climbers and bush walkers wanting to catch some shut-eye just need to unzip the sleeping bag from the back of the jacket, step in and then zip it up on the side. The back of the jacket also contains a hood which after being pulled out, has metal tent rods to support it; enclosing your head and making you look like you’re in a radiation suit. But while the jacket is the MacGyver of all jackets, it definitely isn’t the most fashionable one, coming only in a dull two tone green and two tone black colour. Despite this, the jacket was made for a good cause, JakPak inventor Terry Jensen saying that the “JakPak was born out of a desire to provide shelter for those who need it most” such as disaster victims and the homeless. Well, if a homeless person has US$249.99 to spare, they know what to get!
