Kraton Surakarta
Sukuh temple

Solo (Surakarta), the undiscovered jewel of Indonesia, often plays second fiddle to its more famous neighbour Yogyakarta.

However, Solo deserves the attention of travellers the world over who are sure to be charmed by the laid-back locals, the cultural heritage and the interesting Batik fabrics on offer in the city.

Solo is the perfect destination for travellers who wish to steer clear of the well trodden tourist tracks in other cities in Indonesia such as Bali.

More often than not visitors won't cross paths with other tourists as they discover the alleyways and markets of this interesting city.

Tourists can take a bajaj (traditional transportation) to visit Kraton Surakarta, an 18th-century palace, which housed the King Pakubuwono II and his royal court.

The city's smaller palace, Kraton Mangkunegara, is also worth a visit given its interesting history - It was built in 1757 after Raden Mas Said had a bitter falling out with his uncle Pakubuwono II.

Tourists will also enjoy the Danar Hadi Antique Batik Museum where they will learn about the famous batik cloth, which has become synonymous with Indonesian culture.

The tour within the museum also offers a fascinating insight into the intricate workmanship which is involved in the batik making process as travellers are taking through the cloth factories.

Touted as one of the most erotic temples in the world, the 15th century Candi Sukuh, is also worth a visit.

Located in Berjo Village, Argoyoso district, in the slope of Mount Lawu 35 Km east of Solo, the Sukuh temple chronicles early forms of Javanese-Hindu sex education. At 910 metres above sea level, the temple also offers spectacular views of the city below.

Solo City is approximately 65 km (40 miles) northeast of Yogyakarta , and 100 km (60 miles) southeast of Semarang.  The eastern part of the town is bordered by Bengawan Solo River, the longest river on Java.
