World No.1 to line up for Hyundai Hopman Cup

Thursday, 5 August 2010

The State Government today launched Hyundai Hopman Cup XXIII and announced top women's players Serena Williams and Justine Henin would be competing.

Tourism Minister Liz Constable said Eventscorp and the Hyundai Hopman Cup organisers should be proud that this event continued to break new ground.

"Having the world No.1 ranked women's player Serena Williams as well as international stars like Justine Henin coming to Perth reaffirms this event as one of the most important on Australia's tennis calendar," Dr Constable said.

"The tournament's new broadcast partners Channel 10 and ONE HD will also help reach new audiences across Australia and the world."

The Minister said in 2010, the tournament went live to more than 100 countries with more than 400 hours broadcast and these results are set to be repeated next year.

"Players like the Hyundai Hopman Cup because each player is guaranteed a fixed number of quality singles matches, which is something they don't get at other tournaments," she said.

"It guarantees big crowds - more than 70,000 across the tournament and up to 8,000 for key matches - and the event helps players acclimatise and get the best preparation leading up to the Australian Open later in January.

"Boosting intra and interstate visitation in WA for the event is also a key aim and having international stars like Serena Williams and Justine Henin involved should only help to draw greater crowds."

The Hyundai Hopman Cup championship will be held at Burswood Dome from January 1-8, 2011. General public tickets for the event will go on sale in November.
