Low cost carriers go to far!

Friday, 6 August 2010

I wonder sometimes how far some airlines will go to cut costs and squeeze out another dollar from its customers, and as you will recall I have commented before on the ridiculous proposals that keep on emerging from the king of cost cutting, Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary, but how far do things need to go until they become absolutely crazy?

In a world where nothing apparently surprises anybody any more, we were shocked a while ago to hear that O'Leary is now apparently charging for using the toilets onboard his aircraft, but flying has now has even become sillier and now even right on our won doorsteps!

Recently Ryaniar announced that it was considering selling £4 "stand up" seats - if there was ever an oxymoron that is it as you either sit on a seat or stand up surely! - but now "cheap as chips and do anything to cut costs and make money" Aussie based but Singapore owned airline Tiger Airways, has latched on to O'Leary's craziness.

I say that because in a "me to" revelation, Tiger has announced that it too is also thinking about introducing "stand up" seating!

Now, I don't know about you, but I don't care how cheap these "seats" are, this is crazy - stand up seating?  Come on!  Imagine a one hour flight or longer in Aus standing or should I say leaning in your "seat" strapped in, a bit like an Egyptian mummy, while everyone else that was sensible enough to buy a proper seat - well as proper as they can be these days - seat is having a snooze and relaxing!  Also what about safety - imagine turbulence or a rough landing when you are strapped in to your "stand up" seat.

In case you have not seen them here they are.

Would you fly in one of these "seats"

Tiger says they are considering introducing the "stand up" seats so that they can bring lower fares to their customers and I suppose there are passengers as crazy as Tiger and Ryanair that will buy them, but my view is that all this is going way too far and flies in the face of what flying is all about!

By the way Tiger has also said it is considering the absolutely ridiculous option of charging for toilets - now that is going too far!

The good news is that Qantas and Jetstar boss Alan Joyce says that neither Jetstar or Qantas will consider either - phew!

In terms of aircraft manufacturers it appears that Airbus, the suppliers of aircraft to Tiger, Ryanair are considering these east, with more conservative - thank goodness - Boeing saying no to their introduction.

Finally, I suppose the quality of this type decision making process in Tiger, has to be considered in the light of a carrier who allowed the Channel 7 reality series Airways to be produced, not once but twice, with watching one programme alone in my opinion, enough to make any sensible passenger steer well clear of Tiger - and they say all publicity is good publicity - never!
