No offence for Britons at 2010 Olympics

Monday, 16 August 2010

In preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games to be held in London, British Tourist Authority, VisitBritain have prepared a list of etiquettes outlining cultural differences to prevent British people offending visitors.

The Telegraph reported the list originally created to help waiters, taxi drivers and hotel to maximise business by understanding tourist needs, has been updated for the event to include "a rundown of holiday patterns of each country's inhabitants".

VisitBritain Chief Executive Officer, Sandie Dawe said it is important to provide a friendly and understanding environment because "overseas visitors spend more than £16 billion a year in Britain, contributing massively to our economy and supporting jobs across the country".

"With hundreds of thousands of people thinking of coming to Britain in the run up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012, this new advice is just one way of helping the tourism industry care for their customers - wherever they come from."

Service industry employees are cautioned to avoid eye contact with the Japanese, resist offering bacon to someone from the United Arab Emirates and not take offence to Australian and New Zealanders pom jokes.
