Saturday 18 September is World Parks Day and to celebrate, NSW National Parks are holding fantastic activities and events in parks around the State.

Now in its third year, World Parks Day is an opportunity for everyone to enjoy and appreciate parks around the world.

NSW National Park Managers and Rangers are turning it on for the public with a wide range of activities and events, showcasing the many experiences and attractions available in the State's celebrated national parks.

A range of free activities are happening in and around Sydney including Penguins Periwinkles and Native Plants at North Head in Sydney Harbour National Park and an Eco Family Fun Day at Lane Cove River Tourist Park, with free sausage sizzle, bush band, crafts, Aboriginal cultural performances and native plant giveaways.

For those looking for something to do out of Sydney, there are plenty of activities taking place in coastal and rural parks. In the Hunter Region, Tomaree National Park has two evening activities perfect for families including a spooky night tour around the old forts. The day can also be spent on a skiing tour in Kosciuszko National Park, Lighthouse or Maritime Museum tours at Cape Byron State Conservation Area or, for the more adventurous, a mountain bike exploration tour through Dharug National Park.

On the mid north coast, Karneval at Trial Bay Gaol at Arakoon State Conservation Area is a full day celebration on Sunday, 19 September, paying tribute to the 50-year anniversary of the rebuilding of the gaol's German monument with a free day of German music and food as well as family activities and tours. There's no better weekend to take a trip to the historical area, with the launch of art exhibition Sculpture in the Gaol on the same day.

Most World Parks Day events are free; some attract a small fee. Bookings are essential.
