Kirra Tours: Christchurch Earthquake Update

Tuesday, 7 September 2010

Christchurch is in recovery mode as the New Zealand South Island city works to assess damage from the earthquake which happened early on Saturday morning, knocking down some older buildings and causing widespread damage. The quake struck at 4.35am Saturday, when most people were asleep which saved the population from more injuries from falling masonry and shattering glass.

The central city area has been hardest hit is and has been cordoned off from public access for people’s safety for the time being to allow emergency services to inspect and clear buildings. Though power has now been returned to most of the city, there has been some damage to water and sewage pipes and it may take some days for services to be fully restored.

Initially some flights were cancelled but Christchurch Airport is now functioning normally for domestic and international flights. Most hotels are receiving guests.

The Tranz Alpine and Trans Coastal services have being replaced to date by coaches as potential damage is being reviewed to tracks and infrastructure. It is expected that the TranzAlpine will be operating from tomorrow. The TranzCoastal services remain suspended.

Our major Coach Hotel in Christchurch, the Pavilions is fully operational and in fact received a coach group on Sunday night. They have now resumed their tour of the South island.

We have personally contacted all agents of FIT clients that have bookings for the remainder of this week to reassure them of their holiday arrangements.

Our local Christchurch office has suffered limited damage and is fully operational helping out with any local issues or changes to clients travel plans.
