Rainbow wedding bells are ringing at Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) as they plan the world's first same-sex wedding on board a commercial flight. The airline has announced a social media campaign to find the lucky couple who will be wedded on a flight from Stockholm to New York. "[W]e will let love take over and wed one loving couple, hopefully making it one of the world's first gay-themed flights," the airline said. "Airlines, including SAS, have organized weddings onboard flights for decades, but we would be the first in the world to organise a same-sex wedding in the air," SAS Chief Commercial Officer Robin Kamark said. The airline, which is co-owned by the Swedish, Norwegian and Danish governments, is calling for couples to set up a profile on their websites and compete for votes. Couples are encouraged to send their profile to all their friends on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube to get votes, the couple with the most votes win. The winning couple will win "an exclusive wedding and honeymoon package", including business class flights with SAS to New York, three nights at the W Hotel in New York and flights to Los Angeles with accommodation in Andaz West Hollywood. A United States' version will also be run, with couples winning a like prize to Sweden. SAS has a history of being LGBT-friendly: it was the first European airline to launch a gay microsite; it was the Official Airline of the World Out Games in Copenhagen in 2009 and of Mr Gay World in Oslo in 2010. "SAS is the national airline of three of the world's most liberal and progressive countries in the world, especially when it comes to LGBT rights, so we feel this is a natural celebration of love." |
