Travellers want children-free flights: poll

Wednesday, 8 September 2010

59 per cent of travellers would prefer families to be seated together on flights revealed a recent Skyscanner poll which asked travellers how they feel about travelling with noisy children.

Following from the recent uproar when a woman claimed her ears bled thanks to a baby's screaming on a Qantas flight, Skyscanner asked over 2,000 people if they would like a 'families only' section on board flights.

Less than a third of parents liked the idea, while most non-parents were in favour, 68 per cent voting for the hypothetical sectioning of flights.

While a small eight percent of non-parent respondents thought families had a right to sit where they like, almost 70 per cent "wanted to sit as far away as possible from children".

Almost 25 per cent of respondents even went so far as to say flights without any children would be their preferred option.

Skyscanner Public Relations Manager Mary Porter was not surprised by the poll's results, given that, "in a previous poll we found young children were deemed to be the "most annoying" factor on flights", she said.

"If passengers are prepared to pay extra for child-free flying, perhaps the solution is a premium adults-only section, rather than a pre-allocated families section, giving airlines yet another extra they can charge for?

"I am sure this service would prove really popular on routes that attract a lot of families."

Respondents to the poll suggested solutions to happy travelling with children including: an in-flight baby nursery; the prohibition of badly-behaved children; and as one respondent said, "children should go in the hold".
