Singapore Airlines (SIA) has recently announced that it will again hike ticket prices as of 1 October, in a move that may well be followed by other major carriers. The price hike will be the airline’s third since April, as global air travel strengthens post-crisis and carriers look to return fares to pre-crisis levels. SIA fares will rise by as much as S$200 for an economy seat and up to S$1,000 for a premium ticket, The Straits Times reported. Student fares that come with a 40kg baggage allowance are also set to rise. For example, from S$2,000 to S$2300 for a Singapore-London return ticket and from S$750 to S$900 for those studying in Perth, Australia, excluding taxes and other charges. Many airlines had brought fares back up to pre-crisis levels, Malaysia Airlines' senior general manager for sales and marketing, Mr Bernard Francis said. Figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) showed that fares in July were 4.5 per cent higher for economy class seating compared to a year ago whilst the rise in business class was even more significant at 8.5 per cent. IATA forecasts a much lower loss in 2010, at US$2.8 billion compared to US$5.6 billion in 2009. |
