The video was prepared by the group to run over six months from November to educate tourists on Australian beaches as a new initiative to reduce the number of drowning’s over summer, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. Surf Live Saving Australia hope the plan will reduce the number of tourists drowning in Australian water which according to a report put together by the National Coastal Safety Australian have increased yearly from nine deaths in 2006 to 26 between 2009/10. “Our research indicates that this high risk group has limited English skills, a lack of knowledge about the beach, overestimate their swimming ability, inadequate swimming skills and a general lack of surf safety awareness,” Surf Live Saving Australia Chief Executive Officer Brett Williamson said. The video campaign will contain beach safety messages including always swim with a companion and keep between the flags. Currently Surf Life Saving Australia said they will air the video on a limited amount of airliners; Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, Air New Zealand, China Airlines and South African Airlines. The video is expected to reach up to two million visitors and will be available in English, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Hindi, Malay and Arabic. |
