A Greek court has acquitted two American tourists who were arrested for carrying six human skulls that they bought on the Greek party island of Mykonos.

The Californian men, aged 25 and 29, were arrested at Athens airport on Wednesday, 15 September, as they were departing Greece, News.com.au reported. The skulls were revealed by an airport scanner.

They were initially charged with dishonouring the dead but were later let off by a Greek court. The pair said they had bought the skulls in good faith from a Mykonos boutique for 25 euros (AU$33) each for Halloween.

Greek police are currently trying to track the merchants of the skulls and also determine the origins of the skulls, Greek news agency Ana reported.
