‘I Hate Ryanair’ site shut down by Ryanair

Tuesday, 19 October 2010

A disgruntled passenger started a new site after being forced to hand over the ‘I Hate Ryanair’ website to the budget carrier

The irate passenger who created a website called ‘I Hate Ryanair’ has been ordered to hand over the name to the airline, after authorities ruled the site was tainted by commercial concerns.

Robert Tyler, of London, created the website in 2007 to allow disgruntled passengers to air their grievances about the low cost carrier, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

In April this year, Ryanair chief Michael O’Leary called the site “vitriolic and highly disparaging”, the Guardian reported.

Authorities at Nominet, which manages web addresses in Britain, ruled for the site to be handed over to Ryanair on the basis that Mr Tyler had made £322 in advertising revenue from the site.

One of Nominet's experts, Jane Seager said if the domain name used a company's brand it “must be wholly devoted to honest criticism and open discussion and not potentially tainted by commercial concerns".

Ryanair said the site took unfair advantage of its brand name and made defamatory statements on its service and standards.

Shortly after the site was shut down, Mr Tyler set up a new website, ihateryanair.org, stating on the homepage that the site would “continue to provide you with all the latest" on "this pathetic excuse for an airline”.

“We are yet to decide on whether or not to appeal the decision,” the site read.

“It costs around £3,000 to do so, which could be used instead to buy 16,000,000 Ryanair flights (not including booking fees, credit card fees, baggage fees, bus from the airport in the middle of nowhere etc).”

Ryanair often causes a stir with outlandish comments from its CEO, Mr O’Leary, including suggestions to do away with co-pilots, introduce ‘standing room’ seats, charge for toilet use, and making passengers carry their own checked luggage to a plane’s cargo hold.
