Ecotourism Australia supports Commonwealth Government announcement on indigenous jobs and training at Uluru

Tuesday, 19 October 2010

Ecotourism Australia supports the plan announced by the Commonwealth Government to establish a National Indigenous Training Academy at Yulara to train new resort staff and support the development of an Indigenous tourism and hospitality workforce.

Ecotourism Australia recommended to Parks Australia late last year to consider the opportunities in developing a wider range of eco and indigenous tourism experiences at Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park to support and fulfil visitors’ expectations and to increase visitor satisfaction.
“We see this integral as the Park Managers, Traditional Owners and tourism operators work towards the closure of the Uluru climb,” said Kym Cheatham, CEO Ecotourism Australia.

“We absolutely support the aspiration to provide the traditional owners the Anangu with a range of employment and business opportunities, and the establishment of a National Indigenous Training Academy at Yulara will certainly help achieve this goal.”

Ecotourism Australia believes strongly that tourism can play a significant and important role at Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park particularly in economic terms for the region and nationally.

“Ecotourism Australia looks forward to working with the Indigenous Land Corporation and Wana Ungkunytja to facilitate the success of this important facility to aid the further development of sustainable tourism industry in Central Australia.”
