Oman Air

Oman Air, the national airline of the Sultanate Of Oman, is the latest Gulf carrier to make a statement on the quality of air travel in the 21st century.  Though not serving any destinations in Australia—not yet, at least—Oman Air will certainly be welcome when its aircraft do arrive Down Under.

Though the airline has added many longhaul flights over the past 18 months, Oman Air’s route network is still relatively small.  With the addition of extended-range aircraft to the Oman Air fleet, destinations in Europe and Asia previously unserviceable with small planes are not part of the plan.  Milan is the most recent addition to the list of the airline’s European destinations, which also includes London, Paris, Frankfurt, and Munich.  Connections through Oman Air’s Asian gateways Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur allow for easy access from all major cities in Australia to the Sultanate.  These destinations supplement the many cities served by Oman Air throughout India, southwestern Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Gulf.

Though Oman Air is not able to match the big boys in flight networks, it can certainly match them in quality of service on board.  Oman Air’s Business Class cabin is comparable to many airlines’ First Class offering, and its First Class minisuites in a class of their own.  The classy classes extend to the ground as well; Oman Air’s brand new Business Class Lounge at Muscat International Airport exudes an air of sophistication, while the startlingly chic First Class Lounge is nothing short of spectacular.

The Sultanate Of Oman and Australia have recently finalised a draft for an air transport agreement for flights between the two countries. The draft took effect on 6 April.  The memorandum of understanding permits operation of four flights per week between the Sultanate and the cities of Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.  Unlimited flights from the Sultanate to other cities in Australia are also permitted.
