If you had a choice between beer or bicycles, most women would probably opt for the latter, but not for the 4P Posse, our decision is obvious especially after learning the owner of the brew house is quite a character. Dennis Midden, Brew Bakers owner and expert beer drinker, does not disappoint. As soon as we set foot into his beer making shack-slash-bar, we are greeted with a strong handshake, bordering on a hug due to his grandeur size, and after formal introductions, the jokes begin. The sound system is blaring nondescript country beer-themed music, you wouldn't know so many songs exist, and Dennis gets behind the bar and pours us his latest brew, Erik's Red Ale. Throwing pieces of freshly baked pretzels on the bar counter, without hesitation, we swoop to pick up the pints and bread like birds picking up scraps. Both are delicious, baked and brewed in the small hut. The walls are literally plastered with hundreds, if not thousands, of specially made beer labels, lewd but humours stickers and posters of 1980 swimsuit models - it has a striking resemblance to a middle-aged man shed in any all-American household. Meanwhile, assistant Andy has set up the scales and we start brewing, measuring the barley, adding yeast and boiling it all together. The experience is more about the atmosphere - dancing, singing, and of course, eating and drinking, than actually making the beer, which wouldn't be ready to taste for a few weeks anyway. Brew Bakers makes over 100 types of hand crafted beers and a bakers dozen speciality breads and offers brewing experiences by appointment. For more information, visit www.brewbakers1.com |
