There’s a corner of Sydney International Airport that suddenly departs from the ultra-modern, to the ultra-retro, where the women don chic stewardess uniforms and any moment you expect Austin Powers to jump out saying words like ‘mojo’ and ‘groovy’. Here at the Express Beauty Bar in front of Gate 31, I am suddenly in the 60s and loving it. Flying was once out of reach of the masses. A domain for those who could afford the high ticket prices, it tended towards the glamour (and hijinks) of Tony Curtis’ and Jerry Lewis’ 1965 Boeing, Boeing or Gwyneth Paltrow’s View from the Top. “I used to get my hair set for a flight,” a friendly Sydney-sider tells me in an airport bathroom as I strip off my make up in preparation for my flight. “I wanted to marry a pilot,” she adds conspiratorially. While I choose comfort over constricting suits when flying, a fresh face over panda-eyes and blocked pores, I kind of like the idea of making an event out of a flight. And Express Beauty Bar is bringing the glamour back! I know airport prices are generally ‘entrepreneurial’, but at Express Beauty Bar a manicure is cheaper than Sydney street prices. That alone should get people queuing up in that long waiting period after check-in to boarding. However, there’s also something a little bit special about getting yourself dolled up before heading overseas. Men aren’t left out, with manicures, clipper cuts, and facials on offer. Not to forget the Angelina Jolie ‘threading’ favourite. So sit back, relax and enjoy the pre-flight pampering. For more information, go to: www.expressbeautybar.com. |
