Trafalgar treats top traders

A trip to Spain has got to be one of the best incentives to achieve targets, add in Trafalgar Tours' new At Leisure programme and you've got a winning combination, which is exactly what the tour operator wanted to offer their top performing agents from Australia and New Zealand.

35 Australian consultants, a mix of Trafalgar's 10 Acclaim agency members and individual top performing Cost Saver, At Leisure, North America and Groups agents coupled with 10 top achievers New Zealanders are being rewarded with star treatment on the company's At Leisure 7 night Spain itinerary.

The agents have descended upon Madrid and will travel to Seville and Barcelona, taking in highlights from neighbouring townships.  Kicking off the tour with a special 'early' welcome dinner, agents were treated to Spanish hospitality at its finest at Madrid's famous, Plaza Mayor.

Hosted at the quaint Los Galayos restaurant, operating since 1894, we quickly learned the first lesson when dining in Spain, do not fill up on the tapas.  When the Flinstone sized main courses were eventually served, it was clear the Spanish like their food and a lot of it.

It's true when they say a Tour Director can make or break a tour, and we seem to have hit the jackpot with ours.  Escorted by one of Trafalgar's veteran tour leaders of 16 years, Javier Galvez, it quickly becomes obvious that the consultants are in for a good time and will take away the best of what Spain has to offer through his entertaining informative style.

Some 60 million tourists visit Spain each year, only having dropped in ranking from 3 to 4 worldwide last year, after China overtook the country in popularity.  Madrid, the country's capital with a  population of 5 million, is a great starting point for Aussie and Kiwi travellers and even more convenient with the launch of Emirates new services from Dubai.

The country boasts a population of 45 million, with eight cities citing over one million inhabitants.  Touches of the country's historical Arab and French influence and a recent immigration spike has resulted in a new multi-cultural society stamped with European architecture creating a unique and exotic backdrop.

THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID:
Number of tapas served before main course: 5
Number of people who mistook me for a local: 3
Number of Paella consumed: 1
Slang Phrase of the Day: Una Canita Por favor : a beautiful beer please
Javier's Quote of the Day: "The Plaza Mayor is one of Madrid's most famous sites where now they host conferences, winter markets and so on, but historically it used to be the place for bull fights, public executions, you know, entertainment."
