With a limitless license to experience the world, passengers on board Discovery will be privy to a voyage like no other. The 650-passenger vessel may be smaller than others sailing the seven seas, but that is where her advantages lie. With limited ‘bells and whistles’, Discovery charms her guests with the unique destinations that she visits and the enriching guest speakers chosen to enlighten and entertain. Passengers will arrive in port with knowledge of the history, culture and people for a truly immersive experience.
Amenities Discovery offers passengers a return to classic cruising with traditional British hospitality and personalised service with a crew to guest ratio of almost two-to-one. Whilst there may be no flashy casinos or nightclubs on board, the vessel features eight decks complete with modern, stylish, yet understated amenities.
Pools The Deck Pool and two open air jacuzzis offer views to the stern whilst the Crystal Pool is located at the top of the ship with a sliding glass roof making it suitable for all weather conditions.
Bars, Lounges and Entertainment Four lounges and six bars offer passengers variety without being too overwhelming. The ‘Carousel Lounge and Bar’ plays host to the nightly entertainment program including the chance to dance the night away to the smooth sounds of the ship’s orchestra. Overlooking the swimming pool and stern of the ship, the ‘Discovery Lounge’ is the perfect venue for a beverage with friends while the ‘Palm Court’ is complete with snug chairs to relax and watch the world sail by. Games aficionados can frequent the ‘Bridge Club Lounge’ to participate in Bridge tournaments or challenge fellow passengers to a board game. For those after a more subdued experience, the on board cinema presents a range of new and old release feature films and is also the location for informative talks and lectures throughout the day. Artistic workshops are also offered, with passengers welcome to ‘get their Gleek on’ and join the ‘Choir at Sea’ or even participate in a painting course in watercolour. Dining
The ‘Seven Continents Restaurant’ offers open seating options for both breakfast and lunch, whilst dinner is offered in two sittings. On selected sailings, guests are also invited to dine al fresco. The invitation-only ‘Yacht Club’ is located on the Sun Deck and offers specialty themed menus including Italian, Oriental, Polynesian or Mexican and, with seating for 100, passengers will be given the opportunity to sample the difference at least once a week. Health and Fitness The decadent food on board won’t have the chance to hit the waistline with a fully equipped gym and ladies and men’s saunas. For a touch of pampering, passengers can experience true relaxation with the on board beauty salon offering facials, massages or manicures and a hairdresser, perfect for those special evenings of entertainment. Cabins 350 spacious, well appointed cabins are featured on board Discovery including two single cabins to facilitate travelling by the increasing number of solo cruisers. Solo cruisers are welcomed on board with a drinks reception to meet other passengers also travelling alone.
Premier Cabins Located on the Bridge and Promenade decks, ‘Premier Cabins’ offer bath and/or shower options, air conditioning and a television. A picture window is provided for outside cabins in this category with fruit and a complimentary bottle of champagne on embarkation offered. Standard Cabins Complete with shower, air conditioning, television and personal safe, outside cabins on Pacific Deck feature two windows with outside cabins on Bali and Coral Decks featuring two portholes. Distinguished Guest Speakers
Selected for their depth of knowledge and understanding, the guest speakers sailing on Discovery display a passion for their expertise that is infectious. Drawn from the diplomatic service, academia, the military and the arts, they are recognized authorities on the range of subjects most relevant to the ports visited to further add to the immersive experience on board. The 19-night ‘South East Asia and Australia’ voyage departing Manila on 22 January 2012 and sailing to Sydney will feature lectures by Greg Neale. The founding editor of ‘BBC History Magazine’, Mr Neale has the added experience of being the resident historian for BBC2’s ‘Newsnight’ and BBC4’s ‘The World’ commentating on the history behind news and current affairs. For fans of ‘Antiques Roadshow’, why not take part in ‘Antiques Seashow’ with knowledgeable host of the television show, David Barby featuring as guest speaker. Passengers are invited to bring photos of their special family heirloom on board for valuing during two voyages, ‘Trade Routes to Bombay’ in November 2011 and ‘Taste of India and Arabia’ in March 2012. The opportunity to engage with such eminent and interesting speakers is all included in the cost of the voyage. Meticulously Designed Itineraries
Discovery will take passengers on voyages near and far and sometimes off the beaten track. Her intimate size allows access to ports rarely visited by other lines with the experience enhanced even further by unique and memorable shore tours. Those wanting to spend more time in a destination are welcome to book a cruise extension or escorted tour as part of Discovery’s ‘City Stays’. “Going further and digging deeper” is the Discovery mantra with a dedication to helping passengers gain a more thorough understanding of a destination’s culture, history, people and even native flora and fauna.
