There are some 5 million breeding pairs of Adelie penguins in Antarctica forming large colonies of up to a half a million. They commence their breeding ritual in late October with males beginning building nests with stones and females then joining them and laying eggs during November. The oldest rookery so far found has been used every year since before 4 000 BC.
