Fire aboard Hurtigruten’s MS Nordlys

On Thursday September 15th at 9.17 am a fire was detected aboard Hurtigruten’s MS Nordlys as she approached the Norwegian port of Ålesund. Two of the 55 crew members were sadly killed and four members of crew remain in hospital. All guests were evacuated safely from ship and transported into Ålesund. There were 207 guests in total on board.

Hurtigruten is focusing all their efforts towards accommodating the guests who have been affected by this misfortunate occurrence. The cruise line is working closely with all relevant embassies to secure the necessary travel documentation for clients to ensure they receive a safe and comfortable homeward journey.

On the tragedy, Country Director of Discover the World Marketing, Birgit Eisbrenner said, “Our deepest condolences go out to all those touched by this terrible incident. Our thoughts are with the friends and families of those lost to this devastating accident, along with those who continue to face the aftermath of the ordeal. We are keeping our Australian trade partners abreast and have been working through the weekend to re-accommodate all affected passengers.”
