Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship, Norwegian Breakaway, is set to call New York home from May 2013 through to 31 March 2015.
The largest ship to ever home-port in the city, Norwegian Breakaway will replace Norwegian Star and is expected to attract approximately 140,000 additional passengers to New York City and an estimated USD $35 million in direct local spending.
“By making New York City home to its newest and largest ship, Norwegian Cruise Line is further confirming our standing as a top cruise destination and a place that tourists from around the world want to visit,” said Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at the announcement in the Manhattan Cruise Terminal late last week.
One of the top ten cruise ports in the U.S and hometown of Norwegian Cruise Line president, Kevin Sheehan, New York welcomed 583,000 embarking passengers in 2010 with this figure expected to continue to rise year after year.
The first cruise line to home port year-round in New York will continue to send Norwegian Gem to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal (MCT) with 47 calls expected in 2013. Norwegian Star will make 15 calls before being replaced by Norwegian Breakaway, scheduled to make 34 calls and bringing the total expected number of embarking passengers to 285,000 through the line alone, in 2013.
“We hope Norwegian Breakaway and all of the Norwegian Cruise Line passengers will have an opportunity to visit New York City pre or post cruise and discover the energy and vibrancy of all five boroughs,” said George Fertitta, CEO NYC & Company.
Scheduled for delivery in April 2013, the 144,017 tonne ship will sail a series of 22 seven-day voyages from New York to Bermuda from 12 May 2013 to 6 October 2013 with passengers experiencing three days at sea and three full days in Bermuda.
As part of their ‘Partners First’ philosophy, Norwegian will open group block bookings to travel agents exclusively on 10 October 2011 before the New York to Bermuda sailings become available to ‘Latitudes’ members on 14 October 2011 and the general public on 17 October 2011.
