In relation to the container vessel Rena’s accident, off the coast of New Zealand, MSC Group confirms that it is neither the owner of the involved vessel nor responsible for its management or the crew on board. MSC Group was chartering the container vessel Rena from Costamare Inc. to carry containers between South East Asia and Australia-New Zealand. MSC Group is one of the largest container operators in the world and as a global leader is always committed to reducing the impact of the transportation industry on the maritime system. “MSC is following events in New Zealand very closely and shares the concern of the local community in the affected region” says Captain Michele Bordiga, Chairman, MSC Australia and New Zealand. MSC Group is fully cooperating with the maritime authorities in New Zealand and Svitzer, the salvage operator, who are managing the salvage operation.
