Continental 1461 – Houston to San Salvador – Economy

Thursday, 24 November 2011

Some scary weather and the accompanying turbulence couldn’t shake the friendliness of the Continental flight attendants.

Flight Details
CO1461
Seat 36F
Economy

Check in
Unable to check in online for this sector of the flight, we had an interesting time checking through to our final destination. Read about our ‘adventures’ of the check-in saga here.

Cabin conditions
This B737 had comfortable, if narrow seats in a 3-3 configuration. Bathrooms were clean (always a plus) and the cabin was neither too hot nor (as is more often the case) too cold.

Customer service
One flight attendant in particular was VERY friendly which more than made up for his less than impressed colleague who seemed to not be a fan of the free smile…although, after taking off, landing and flying through two particularly bad storms, I don’t know how easy my smiles would come either.

Entertainment
An agreement with cable provider DIRECTV meant that passengers had access to familiar cable channels at US$5.99 ($7.99 for longer flights). However, the free preview option allowed me to watch an episode of Seinfeld for free thanks to a delay in take off and the fact that I had my own headphones. Kismet.

Meal Service
The short flight included a ‘snack’ of a cheeseburger, salad, dressing and a cookie. The vegetarian option was the salad, dressing and cookie. The vegan option was the salad. I opted for nothing and wondered what happens to those meal requests you send at time of booking and when you again confirm prior to check in.

On time performance
Weather delayed our plane’s arrival into Houston and hence our departure from it. But this was nothing compared to the mid-flight turbulence and landing during an electrical storm. As we were taxiing to the gate, suddenly the whole airport and runways went black. Watching lightning strike closer and closer until the airport had regained power was a fun few minutes.

My favourite thing
The lovely flight attendant who spent the flight joking I would get poor service following a cheeky remark made upon entering the plane.
