In an effort to encourage people to capture a 12 second video of their New Year’s Eve celebrations, City of Sydney has launched a new free iPhone App.

The App allows users to upload a 12 second video of them celebrating the New Year which will then be edited into a mini film and distributed online in a matter of hours through Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

As part of the short film people are also urged to share their aspirations for 2012 in eight words or less.

The initiative is part of a Tourism Australia and City of Sydney combined venture, Project: 12, to promote Sydney to the world through social media channels.

Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy said the App offers a new and inspiring way to show the world why there is no other destination like Australia.

“Project: 12 allows us to do just that - in this case, by showcasing New Year’s Eve in Sydney. Using popular social media platforms, the content captured in this short film will be distributed globally and allow people to share in one of world's most spectacular New Year celebrations," Mr McEvoy said.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said more and more people are using smart phones and depend on Apps to obtain information and interact with others.

“We are providing information that people need in the way they want to receive it,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Our App gives users real time notifications of vantage points, road closures and events. People can also find out about crowd capacities, ensuring a safe and great night out.”

To celebrate the New Year the City is also holding a photo competition where people can submit their photos from the night via the app or the City’s website and win a whole host of prizes.
