Singapore Airlines Flight SQ232 – Sydney to Singapore - Economy

Monday, 12 December 2011

Christmas movies, Christmas decorations and a few jolly ol’ carols, flying Sydney to Changi International never felt more joyous than it did with Singapore Airlines.

Details
A380
Seat 53H
Economy

Check in
As though the airport were making way for my arrival, the queues and clusters of people departing from Sydney Airport’s International Terminal quickly trimmed down as I arrived at Singapore Airlines’ check-in.

The fast and speedy service was met by friendly staff who offered to move me from the middle section of the A380 to an isle (note: window seats were unavailable).

After a few clicks on the keyboard, one passport check, a boarding ticket, and two departure and arrival forms later I was ready to head to Gate 61.

Luggage Allowance
Packing for two trips; one a warm trip in Singapore, followed by a much cooler holiday in New Zealand, I was certain my luggage would exceed the 20 kilo limit.

But to my surprise and the lovely Singapore Airlines staff checking-me-in, my luggage was three kilos below the limit leaving plenty of weight space for shopping at Marina Bay Sands.

Cabin conditions
What a gorgeous vessel!

Spreading Christmas cheer, Singapore Airlines had ever-so-cutely hung a few (a nice decent amount, nothing tacky) Christmas decorations around the different decks.

A fairly new aircraft, the interior was still extremely clean and fresh.

The airline provided guests with a pillow and blanket for the duration of the flight as well as supplied ear phones and socks to warm the feet.

My favourite aspect of the aircraft was the comfortable footrests, they supported the foot while keeping legs at a 90 degree angle (without reclining the chair).

Other features of the cabin included the obvious extra spacing only available in the super-jumbo jet and a cup holder separate from the tray.
Although I was seated in economy, I definitely didn’t feel like cattle class.

Customer service
Crew worked tirelessly throughout the entire seven hour flight, serving three meals, keeping up with everyone’s demands while maintaining genuine smiles.

As well as poised with extremely polite and soft attitudes, staff looked absolutely immaculate with the men in ‘shmick’ suits and the women wearing traditional Singaporean gowns and flat sandals!

I love that the airline allows its female staff to wear flat shoes and I desperately want one of those dresses (although I doubt I could pull it off).

Entertainment
The entertainment options on board the A380 were of course, endless. Whether you were in the mood for some Christmas cheer, a few oldies or new releases Singapore Airlines has decked out its system with options to suit everyone.

Although I settled on watching The Help, Harry Potter and Home Alone, I did see a few of my childhood favourites I decided to reserve on the way home including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I noticed a few other people around me choosing to play some of the gaming options while others preferred to make their own playlists, chilling to their favourite tunes.

Half-way through the flight the airline also announced guests could make their way to the rear of the aircraft and purchase duty-free items.

Meal Service
The food and drinks never stopped coming!

Kicking off with lunch, passengers had the options of choosing Thai Style Curry Beef or a Pan-fried  Chicken.

I chose the Pan-fried Chicken which was served with baked potatoes, peas and carrots with potato salad, salmon, bread, butter and cheese on the side.
A great, fulfilling and somewhat healthy meal was topped off with an original Drumstick ice cream.

Constantly topping off and asking travellers for more drinks the second half of the flight saw the airline serve a ‘refreshment meal’, with options including; Chicken and Mushroom Pie or Egg Noodles.

My favourite thing
The pilot referring to his co-pilot and his “friend” during his welcoming announcement.

Cowabunga dudes!
