Marina Bay Sands, my castle

Tuesday, 13 December 2011

Another day, another adventure as Marina Bay Sands unleashes the inner child eager to explore every nook and cranny of the of the three tower hotel, casino, shopping and theatre complex.

Still stuck on Sydney time, I jumped out of bed three hours earlier than I would have preferred but was immediately taken aback and instantly awoken by the spectacular city view.

Feeling like somewhat of a Queen dominating everything below, I was quickly snapped back into reality shouting ‘two full days left to explore my new castle’ (maybe not completely back to reality).

After a quick shower in what must be the world’s most equipped bathroom, I headed downstairs for breakfast at Rise.

Located on lever 1 in Tower 1, the Rise is an international breakfast buffet literally packed with every type of breakfast you could ever imagine.

Nutella, eggs, ten different types of breads, dumplings, chilli sauce and good ol’ cereal, you name it they have it. So I felt very much at home packing on the carbs with my butter & bread combination mixed with a croissant and some watermelon.

After some much needed breakfast I headed back up to the hotel room with the intention of making up some lost sleep but found myself exploring the entertainment unit.

Famished again only a couple of hours after breakfast, I was ready to bite into Todai for some lunch.

My second restaurant here in Marina Bay Sands and let me tell you, this place is not short on food!

Todai is a Korean buffet restaurant serving cuisine from all over the world.

So extensive are their dining options that they had designed a map to sit in place of their placemats to guide guests to certain dishes.

Unable to resist, I enjoyed two servings and one dessert platter.

With so much food on offer one would think the quality of the dish would suffer but ‘mmms’ and ‘oh goods’ were coming from around the entire restaurant.

A must try for anyone visiting Marina Bay Sands.

As my dining experience at Todai came to a close I headed up to Sky on 57 for a quick chat with Celebrity Chef Justin Quek who told e-Travel Blackboard the secret ingredient behind a good meal and his favourite travel destinations.

Cooking up the menu at Sky on 57 for over a year, Mr Quek explained he had designed a range that used the important base in French food but brought his Singaporean roots into each dish with local spices.

With the aim of inviting everyone to his home, he said the restaurant would be shaking up its offerings over the festive season, to provide European and US visitors with a familiar winter dining experience in a tropical destination.

Check out more on e-Travel Blackboard’s interview with Mr Quek on Monday.

Beyond full by now, it was time to burn some calories with a walk around the Titanic Exhibition.

Hosted by the ArtScience Museum located just outside Marina Bay Sands, director Tom Zalleck explained the concept behind the title of the building was to signify the connection between Art and Science.

For more information on the exhibition see today’s photo gallery; Titanic docks as Marina explores Narnia.

After a quick tour of the emotional exhibition, it was back to food with a one-on-one chat with Pita Pan owner Kunal Pushkarna.

The only vegetarian restaurant located within Marina Bay Sands and located directly across from the ArtScience Museum, Mr Pushkarna told e-Travel Blackboard the one-month old restaurant had received positive response from visitors eager to enjoy a meal without any form of meat.

True to his words, it’s easy to forget the lack of chicken, fish and red meat with dining options incredibly tasty and fulfilling.

Offering a mix of freshly made Middle Eastern and Mediterranean food, menu options included a wide variety of dips; Baba Ganoush to hummus as well as falafel, dolma and tabouli.

Another must-try for anyone visiting Marina Bay Sands.

Heading off from Pita Pan, it was time to explore Singapore outside of the resort with a half-hour River Cruise Ride.

Exploring the history of the city, it was amazing and surprisingly emotional to find that every building, bridge and statue had a story to tell.

Riding on still waters, the Ride even touched on the reasons behind the calmness of the water and how Marina Bay Sands came to be.

The tour even gave guests the opportunity to snap pictures of the complex from the outside.

If you’re going on a River Cruise Ride, I recommend taking it during the night when the city lights sparkle around you.

Although it seemed as though my day was coming to a close, I couldn’t end it without walking through the wardrobe full of fur coats and into Narnia.

Exploring the mythical land, I was able to relive my favourite childhood tales and even pretend I was Lucy greeted into Narnia by Mr Tumnus and the Light Pole.

Fitted with costumes used in the motion pictures to props including thrones and swords, the exhibition was a fun way to end a food-filled day.

I’ll see you tomorrow on the other side of the Wardrobe.
