Bucket list brings out best destinations

Thursday, 15 December 2011

A competition run by Jetset Travel on Facebook asking fans to nominate the top five destinations on their bucket list has revealed some surprising results as competitors stand a chance to win $5,000 worth of travel.

So far over 650 participants have listed more than 3100 destinations, 16 per cent being in the US with New York, Hawaii and Alaska topping the list. Ionic sights like Route 66, the Statue of Liberty and the Grand Canyon appear most popular.

Participants stepped outside the traditional dream holidays like a kiss atop the Eiffel Tower in Paris, New York for New Year’s Eve, and a gondola ride in Venice, with some bucket lists including travel to outer space, cave diving in Croatia and a night in a Mongolian ‘ger’.

Domestic travel remained high on the list, with 8.5 per cent of nominations here on home soil in Australia, with Kakadu, the Kimberleys, Broome, Uluru,  Sydney, the Great Barrier Reef and Tasmania all featuring.

The range continues to adventurous destinations in Asia like Mongolia, Bhutan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and North Korea, and stretches to warmer beach destinations like the Maldives, Bora Bora, Samoa and Tahiti.  Antarctica was a high ranking colder destination with 57 nominations, along with Lapland, Sweden, Norway and Iceland.

Travel experiences also got a mention with activities like camel back trekking in the Sahara, running with the bulls in Pamplona and diving with great white sharks high on the itinerary.

The competition is open to Australian residents only, closing at 9am on 26 December 2011.  To enter, participants must list their five most desired travel destinations or experiences and write in 25 words or less why they think they should be chosen.
