WiFi in the sky with SAS

Wednesday, 21 December 2011

One of the first airlines to offer wireless internet onboard back in 2004, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is once again stepping up its customer experience, allowing passengers to connect with SASWiFi to surf the internet and use their GSM phones onboard.

The use of mobile devices has become ever more popular in recent years, increasing demand amongst airlines for new mobile services in-flight.  SAS has moved with the times and the first plane equipped with SASWiFi will be in the air in a matter of days.

In an effort to provide customers with the best flight experience, Scandinavian Airlines and Panasonic signed a contract to offer WiFi and GSM using Panasonic’s eXconnect and eXphone systems.   This will allow Scandinavian Airlines to offer one of the best WiFi, GSM telephony and wireless entertainment solutions in the market.

Chief Commercial Office at Scandinavian Airlines Robin Kamark said the airline is always trying to find innovative ways to improve the flight experience for its customers, with this new technology servicing what customers have really been asking for.

“We’ve chosen a supplier that has extensive experience of delivering in-flight entertainment systems and we’re sure that we’ve made a good strategic choice,” Robin Kamark said.

Initially offered free of charge to the passengers, the SASWiFi is the first in a line of improvements to the onboard experience for travellers. The next phase of improvements will include films, videos, games, destination information and a booking facility of services the destination, including taxis, tours and hotel reservations.
