Posting holiday plans encourages thieves

Thursday, 22 December 2011

Travellers are being warned against use of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to discuss travel plans in an attempt to reduce burglary over the holiday season.

While many people feel comfortable sharing personal information with friends and colleagues, it doesn’t take for a thief to connect information posted about you, your work out when your house might be empty or your car unattended.

Insurance Council of Australia chief executive Rob Whelan warns people against posting personal information and dates of travel for the holidays, recommending travellers only tell family and friends of travel plans, and avoid posting photos online until they return.

Mr Whelan said posting travel plans on social media websites was like sticking a note on the front door of your house telling burglars to help themselves.
