Virgin Australia has welcomed a 5.1 percent jump in international capacity for the month of November 2011 while its competitor, Qantas continued to feel the effects of strikes during the prior month with a 1.5 percent rise in seat capacity over the same period. While the Australian flag carrier saw its international passenger load rise by 7,000 over November 2010, Virgin Australia witnessed its international count rise from 193,999 during November 2010 to 203,893 in November 2011. Virgin’s domestic operations also increased over Qantas domestic with a 3.5 percent increase in passengers carried compared to November the year before, while the Australian flag carrier saw its domestic passenger count rise by only 1.3 percent. Despite the slow growth in Qantas, the carrier’s subsidiary, Jetstar outshined both carriers with a 9.3 percent jump in international passengers carried for November 2011 over November 2010, while Jetstar domestic jumped 5.5 percent over the same period. The rise in Jetstar Australia and the 15.4 percent increase in Jetstar Asia’s business saw the total Qantas Group carry 3.2 percent more passengers in November last year over the month during 2010. Qantas Group also saw its revenue passenger kilometres increase 5.3 percent for the month while its revenue seat factor fell 1.6 points from 81.1 percent in November 2010 to 79.5 percent in November last year.
