Multigenerational travel a boost for agents

Wednesday, 4 January 2012

Multigenerational travel is one of the hottest trends in travel and hospitality with travel agents benefiting most from the need to help navigate the logistical needs of such travellers.

Preferred Hotel Group who represents independent luxury hotels and resorts worldwide recently underwent a comprehensive study of leisure travellers seeking answers to ‘Who makes up this growing segment within the leisure travel market and what are they looking for?’

"Because of their numbers, frequency of travel, and use of traditional travel agents, the multigenerational traveller presents a powerful opportunity for the international travel market," President of Preferred Hotel Group Lindsey Ueberroth said.

The findings showed Multigenerational travellers are planning "Milestone Vacations" with nearly eight out of ten planning a vacation around a life event such as a birthday.  Other events such as anniversaries, family reunions and weddings also ranked popular.

More likely to take an international trip, multigenerational travellers use and trust a travel agents advice, with nearly four million people, representing 20 per cent of the market, using the services of a travel agent.

"Multigenerational travel creates a challenging level of complexity in coordinating schedules, managing multiple departure points, booking additional if not adjoining rooms and more," said Ueberroth.

Preferred Hotel Group analysed more than 400 variables in the study including the travel-related attitudes, behaviours, preferences, social values, lifestyles, and media habits of leisure travellers who have identified themselves as multigenerational travellers.
