Tourism employs more in 2011

The travel industry created jobs for 2.7 percent more people last year with 13,500 more people recruited to work in the sector compared to 2010.

According to Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Tourism Satellite Account figures released late last year, despite the rise in employees, tourism’s share of total employment remained at 4.5 percent across the country.

The industry’s consumption also jumped last year over the prior 12 months, with internal tourism consumption rising 2.6 percent to $95,653 million as domestic rose 2.1 percent to $71,972 million.

Further increases were seen in the industry’s international tourism exports with a 4.4 percent increase while domestic imports hiked 11 percent to $30,901 million.

Despite positive movements throughout the year, the industry’s gross value fell 0.2 percent to 2.4 percent while direct tourism gross value increased 2.3 percent to $31,495 million.
