Goat Island is located in Sydney Harbour, west of the Harbour Bridge between McMahons Point and Balmain. Goat Island boasts numerous heritage buildings, outstanding city views and tranquil landscape settings. Using a free Audio Tour or iPhone APP, take a self-guided audio tour for a rare opportunity to explore the convict, maritime & military history of Goat Island at your own pace. Explore the 1830s convict-built Gunpowder magazine. Hear about convict escapes and the soldiers who guarded the gunpowder store. Visit one of the first Water Police Stations in Sydney & much more. Situated in the middle of Sydney Harbour, Fort Denison has a fascinating history and is an amazing lunch venue with stunning harbour views from the island restaurant and cafe. Fort Denison has seen it all – the development of the city of Sydney, Japanese submarine invasion and the building of both the Harbour Bridge and Opera House just metres away. It was even hit by friendly fire during WWII. The island provides visitors a fascinating link with Sydney's convict past and is part of the Sydney Harbour National Park. The Martello Tower was completed in 1857 and the island was named Fort Denison in 1862 after the governor, William Denison. Its tower is one of only two surviving Martello Towers in the Southern hemisphere. The Fort gun is fired at 1pm daily. With great views, large grassy areas, shady trees, a small swimming beach, a gazebo and five picnic shelters, Shark Island is the perfect destination for a harbour picnic.
