Arrests for alleged rapists aboard Allure

Friday, 6 January 2012

Alleged rapist Luiz Scavone

Two alleged rapes have been reported aboard the world’s largest cruise ship, Allure of the Seas, during her 10-day Christmas and New Year’s cruise.

Returning to Port Everglades on 3 January, the first incident occurred in the early morning of New Year’s Day. A Brazilian passenger believed to be in his 40s allegedly sexually harassed before he sexually assaulted a U.S college student.

In a report by Cruise Law News, the victim was treated in the ship’s medical centre, however the accused was released by the FBI and the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) and has since returned to Brazil where he can no longer be extradited.

The second incident occurred on the last night of the cruise and involved a 15-year-old girl who was allegedly lured to a passenger cabin from the teen club ‘Fuel’ at 1:45am, by a 15-year-old boy who was cited as saying that there was a party she was invited to.

Upon entering the cabin, the victim, reportedly from Iowa and cruising with family, was confronted by 20-year-old Brazilian passenger, Luiz Scavone.

The Orlando Sentinal reports that the victim told both men she had a curfew and had to leave but was not allowed and was subsequently raped.

"Royal Caribbean's guest care team offered the female guest a variety of assistance, including medical care and counselling,'' Royal Caribbean manager of Global Corporate Communications Cynthia Martinez said in a written statement.

Ms Martinez went on to say that the cruise line "will continue to support law enforcement agencies during their investigation” and confirmed that the ship reported the incident to the FBI and BSO immediately and allowed them to board the ship on docking at Port Everglades.

Both men were charged on arrival at Port Everglades with “lewd and lascivious battery” according to the BSO and Mr Scavone was ordered to relinquish his Brazilian passport and placed on a USD$10,000 bond.

CBS Channel 4 reported that if the immigration hold is lifted and Mr Scavone is released on bond, that he will be fitted with a GPS monitor and will be unable to apply for a replacement passport.

The teenaged alleged attacker has been placed in Broward’s Juvenile Assessment Centre following his charges.
