Wednesday, 11 January 2012

This article will be updated as more news comes to hand:

Travellers and residents in Indonesia were on tsunami watch earlier this morning after a 7.3 magnitude quake struck 420 kilometres off the coast of Aceh province.

Although the warning is said to have been removed since, the quake struck the region today at local time 2.37 am with the tsunami warning issued immediately after, Herald Sun reported.

According to media the quake hit 30 kilometres beneath the ocean floor but caused trembles for up to 30 seconds in Banda Aceh.

"There is a very small possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than a hundred kilometres from the earthquake epicentre,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned in a statement after the earthquake struck.
