Next stop Sydney: AirAsia X

Tuesday, 17 January 2012

AirAsia X CEO Mr Azran Osman-Rani and Bondi Rescue life guard promote launch of new service Sydney to KL

Expanding low-cost operations down under, AirAsia X has signed on to operate daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Sydney.

Commencing 2 April this year, the budget airline’s parent company AirAsia Group chief executive Tony Fernandes said the route would not only play a role in boosting tourism into Sydney but would also meet growing demand between Australia and Malaysia.

“This is no April Fools Day joke,” AirAsia X CEO Mr Azran Osman-Rani said referring to the flight that will depart Kuala Lumpur for Sydney on 01 April 2012 at an announcement at the rooftop of the Museum of Contemporary today.

Mr Osman-Rani spoke about the growth potential of the airline being on track as AirAsia forecasted five cities in Australia in five years.   With Sydney joining the already three cities serviced (Gold Coast, Perth and Melbourne) the airline is on track to meet this forecast.

Working in conjunction with Destination NSW, the daily service will bring an additional 55,000 visitors into Sydney.  With the broader partnership and a two year marketing deal, the new service is set to accelerate Sydney’s presence in the key Asian market.

AirAsia X has launched fares from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur from as low as $99* one way on Economy and just $499* one way on its Premium Fly Flatbeds.  The deal is available until sold out for online bookings from 14:00 EST today, 17 January to 22 January for the travel period from 2 April to 27 October.
