MAS pilot arrested for alleged drug charge

Wednesday, 18 January 2012

A Malaysia Airlines pilot has been arrested and charged in Sydney for allegedly carrying five kilograms of methamphetamine in his suitcase earlier this month.

Pulled up by Australian Federal Police upon arrival into Sydney Airport, Thiagu Supramaniam is said to be charged with two counts of importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug and one that is allegedly relating to a drug deal in a Sydney hotel which took place in August last year, the Herald Sun reported.

According to media, the pilot had been under observation since he was said to have delivered a 1.4 kilogram bag a heroin to a man at the Sydney hotel last year.

Customs officers then searched the man’s bag once he had arrived into Sydney last week and found six packaged of a “white crystalline substance” which tests proved to be methamphetamine.

Although he did not request bail, Magistrate Julie Huber formally refused it.

The pilot did however request the court adjourn the case so he could notify his family. The case is expected back in court sometime this week.
