Three baby penguins born at the Darling Harbour attraction are welcomed into new home Sydney Aquarium today celebrated the arrival of three new penguin chicks to its aquatic family. The three baby penguins – who have been in the nursery since they were only a few weeks old to ensure a healthy growth rate – were reunited with their parents after being released into Sydney Aquarium’s main penguin exhibit. As part of the introduction process, the baby penguins underwent their inaugural weigh-in, tipping the scales at an approximate healthy weight of 1 kg each. Never mind the reunion with mum and dad though – on release the three month old baby penguins jumped straight into the water for a playful summer swim. Home to now 17 penguins in total; Sydney Aquarium holds monthly weigh-ins to monitor their health and have trained the adult penguins to hop onto a set of scales, staying still whilst keepers read their weight. To celebrate the arrival of the new penguin chicks, Sydney Aquarium will launch a ‘Penguin Party’ this Saturday 20th January, where guests can participate in a range of activities including face painting, engage with life-size penguin characters, chat to Sydney Aquarium’s aquarists at interactive penguin science stations and will even be invited to participate in a competition to name the three new residents. “We’re extremely proud and excited to be introducing three penguin chicks to our penguin family here at Sydney Aquarium. It’s a testament to the success of our breeding program and we look forward to watching their unique behaviour develop over the next few months as they become acquainted with their parents and extended family,” commented Martin Garwood, Sydney Aquarium Aquarist.
