Sigatoka River Safari Employs Fiji’s First Female Drivers
Multiple award winning Sigatoka River Safari have done the unthinkable in Fiji and hired a Fijian female Jet boat Captain and Fijian female ATV driver, making them the first company in Fiji to employ women in these positions.
Jordana Whippy or “Captain Joey” was recently hired as a Sigatoka River Safari Jet Boat Captain and Josephine Traill or “JT” as she is called as an ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) driver. The two young women have achieved jobs that most people would think impossible to do in Fiji, let alone for females to do them.
Both Jordana and Josephine admit they never imagined doing the work they are doing now and feel blessed that their jobs allow them to meet different kinds of people from all over the world without leaving Fiji.
They both stumbled across these positions and didn’t hesitate to take advantage of the opportunities.
“I heard that there was a need of a Jet Boat Captain and I thought why not? My family, Jay and the Sigatoka River Safari team had faith in me so I just took the opportunity and enjoyed the experience” Explains Jordana.
Jordana undertook six weeks of vigorous training in Jet Boating in New Zealand under the watchful eye of Neil Ross, a pioneer of Jet Boating with over 20 years experience. It wasn’t long before Jordana was a Jet Boat Captain and driving all the Jet Boats on the Sigatoka River Safari.
“This job was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I now believe nothing is impossible if you have an open mind.” Says Jordana.
Josephine on the other hand, was fresh out of hospitality school and was looking to gain some work experience and ready to take on anything that came her way.
When the opportunity came up for an ATV driver/guide for the new and original Off-Road Cave Safari, Josephine was only too happy to “try out for the position. She got the position and was trained in ATV driving by Josh Ratukuna.
“I love driving the ATV’s it’s just like driving a normal car, except it’s a lot bigger and more powerful. I enjoy being a guide and driving the guests to a place where even locals hardly go to,” Josephine said. |
