A seemingly innocent post on micro-blogging service Twitter resulted in two tourists being refused entry into the United States. Before his trip to Los Angeles, bar manager Leigh Van Bryan tweeted to a friend: "Free this week for quick gossip/prep before I go and destroy America? x," UK media reported. His tweets were intercepted by Homeland Security agents and upon arrival into the U.S. Mr Bryan and his traveling companion, Emily Bunting, were questioned for five hours before being locked up overnight with drug dealers, Mr Bryan told media. "The Homeland Security agents were treating me like some kind of terrorist,” he told The Sun. “I kept saying they had got the wrong meaning from my tweet but they just told me 'You've really f***ed up with that tweet, boy'." The US Customs and Border Protection agency told the BBC that its role was to maintain a balance between "securing our borders while facilitating the high volume of legitimate trade and travel that crosses our borders every day". "We strive to achieve that balance and show the world that the United States is a welcoming nation." |
