Tourism Fiji Weather Update No. 2A

Thursday, 2 February 2012

Nadi, Fiji – 1400 hours, 01 February 2012

While strong wind warnings remain for some areas of Fiji and parts of the country continue to experience heavy rain, Tourism Fiji advises that hotels have not reported damages and Fiji’s visitor industry is continuing to take all measures to ensure the well-being of all guests, staff and property.

The strong wind warning issued yesterday by Fiji’s National Weather Forecasting Centre (NWFC) remains in place for the western side of the main island of Viti Levu, the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

The NWFC has also cautioned that flooding may occur in low-lying areas.

International flights into the country continue as normal.  Domestic carriers including Pacific Sun advised that while Nadi-Suva flights and flights from Nadi and Suva to Vanua Levu continue to operate, other outer island flights have been affected by the current weather conditions.

A help desk, set up and operated by Airports Fiji Limited, is assisting with passenger enquiries at Nadi International Airport.

On the water, South Sea Cruises/Awesome Adventures and Malolo Cat IV are operating limited Mamanuca ferry services. The Yasawa Flyer is operating limited services to the Yasawa Islands.

Passengers intending to travel to the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands should check with their travel agent or the ferry operator for the latest information.

All day cruises operated by South Sea Cruises/Awesome Adventures, Captain Cook Cruises and other operators remain on hold until further notice

Main roads remain mostly unaffected by the weather enabling all tourism transportation services to operate as usual.  As reported in yesterday’s advisory, some roads in Rakiraki in the east of Viti Levu have been closed due to heavy rainfall.

Travellers should continue to contact their resort or airline for additional information.

Tourism Fiji said Fiji’s visitor industry is very well-prepared for all eventualities and continues to monitor the situation closely.
