Olympic 2012 organisers have announced the Olympic Flame will take an eight day tour of Greece this year before arriving in the UK on 18 May this year.

A statement released by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) revealed that the Flame will be lit at the Temple of Hera in Olympic, Greece on 10 May this year, take-off on an eight day trek around Mainland Greece before setting off on British Airways flight BA2012 to the UK.

Arriving 17 May this year at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose in Cornwall, the Flame will then be passed on and travelled around the UK for up to 70 days, concluding the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay in London for the opening ceremony on the eve of 27 July this year.

“It gives me great pleasure to confirm 10 May as the Flame lighting date and RNAS Culdrose as the Olympic Flame’s arrival point into the UK,” LOCOG chair Sebastian Coe said.

“My team is looking forward to working with the Hellenic Olympic Committee, the Ministry of Defence and our commercial partners to create exciting events to mark the Flame’s Greek provenance and its arrival to our shores.”

LOGOC said the Flame would travel up to 8,000 miles across the country, being carried by 8,000 yet-to-be name Torchbearers who will be chosen for the inspirational influence.
