Focused on building its voluntourism commitment, Flight Centre has announced the acquisition of Canada based online company, GoVoluntouring. Announced early this morning, Flight Centre said in an online statement the purchase reiterated its focus on social and environmental stewardship and is in the process of working with the company to develop an integrated site. Describing the company as a “valuable resource”, Flight Centre Canada president Greg Dixon said the acquisition will help the company meet growing demand in volunteer-based travel. “...we see a responsibility to proactively contribute to this emerging sector,” Mr Dixon said. Current GoVoluntouring founder and chief executive Aaron Smith said he will continue to run operations of the company but will move headquarters into Flight Centre’s Vancouver office. “As a social enterprise, our objective was to transform one million travellers into one million volunteers,” Mr Smith. “The sheer breadth of distribution will make Flight Centre’s GoVoluntouring a massive change agent. “I’m excited for the future of voluntourism, and thrilled to be a part of Flight Centre’s commitment to growing this sector responsibly.” |
