Passengers flying into Vanuatu this week may face some travel disruptions as severe storms strike the South Pacific. Yesterday, Air Vanuatu announced it had cancelled all international and domestic flights for Tuesday and Wednesdays as Cyclone Jasmine rips through the region. “...we have been forced to reschedule NF21 to now depart Brisbane at 0230 Thursday morning (09 FEB) and fly direct to Port Vila,” the carrier’s general manager Flight Operations Captain Yan Nicholls said in a statement. “Santo passengers will be re-accommodated on the ATR-72 that morning. “Forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology indicate the cyclone will affect the Port Vila region for some time. “We have taken their advice and will also reschedule our Auckland and Sydney services tomorrow.” As well as moving flights between Brisbane and Port Vila, the carrier also said Wednesday’s services to Sydney, NF10 and NF11 would be moved to Thursday. According to ABC Asia Pacific News, Cyclone Jasmine’s winds are expected to maintain strong winds pushing 165 kilometres an hour over Vanuatu for the next 12 to 24 hours. While Vanuatu battles its own storm, Tongans and Fijian are expecting to meet the strong winds of Tropical Cyclone Cyril over the coming days. Travelling 740 kilometres per hour, Cyril is said to be heading east, south east. |
