Improving cruise ship access into Cairns could help boost the regions economic opportunities, according to the Tourism and Transport Forum (TTF). Chief executive John Lee said in relation to the Deepening Trinity Inlet that the sector that already contributes millions of dollars into the economy had “even higher” potential if supported by the right cruise access and facilities. He explained that “deepening the channel” would make excess room for larger ships to berth, allowing passengers to transfer or catch a bus into the city’s center and spend at locals restaurants, shops and attractions. “Ships are often in port for less than a day each visit, so time is of the essence,” Mr Lee said. “Improving the economic activity and business and employment opportunities for Cairns is why deepening the channel has been on TTF’s agenda for some time. “The LNP is to be congratulated for today’s commitment, especially with cruise ships getting larger and larger.” The organisation’s head added encouraging more ships to visit the region would bring thousands of extra tourists every year and help Cairns counter-act challenges in the industry. “Considering the challenges the Cairns tourism industry has been facing, this will deliver a welcome boost to the city and surrounding region,” he concluded. |
