New South Wales' capital is still everyone's favourite place down under and in the South Pacific, according to TripAdvisor.

The online review site’s annual 2012 Travellers’ Choice Destinations Awards found Sydney outperformed other cities in the region while also coming in as the fourteenth most popular city across the world.

The culture and arts capital of Australia, Melbourne also performed well, landing the second most popular destination in Australia, followed by Port Douglas.

Worldwide, London reigned as the most popular destination for reviewers followed by New York City, Rome and Paris.

Up to five American cities also made the top 25 popular destinations including San Francisco (fifth), Chicago (eleventh), Las Vegas (seventeenth), Los Angeles (twenty-first) and New Orleans (twenty-second).

“Whether travellers are looking for a grand annual vacation or a quick weekend getaway, they can be inspired by hundreds of incredible travel destinations as identified by TripAdvisor’s community of travellers,” a TripAdvisor spokesperson said.
