On Saturday (6/23) the beautiful art of hula took to the streets of New York City for thousands of lucky onlookers, courtesy of Hawaiian Airlines and Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu hula halau.

At six locations – The High Line Elevated Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Washington Square Park, Times Square, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and a 5th Avenue crosswalk – a special Hawaiian Airlines bus wrapped in colorful Aloha print with the inviting message, Feel Free to Hula, pulled up unannounced.

From there, the performers engaged in “Hit-and-Run Hula” to the delight of bystanders. Except for the abbreviated hula while crossing 5th Avenue, each performance lasted about 15 minutes.

Blaine Miyasato, Hawaiian’s vice president of product development, said, “We wanted to surprise our new friends in New York City with the enjoyment of hula and give them another reason to dream about coming to Hawaii.”

Hawaiian presented the “Hit-and-Run Hula” to celebrate its recent launch of daily nonstop service between Honolulu and New York’s JFK Airport, begun June 4. On each flight, travelers from New York (and all of Hawaiian’s gateway cities) enjoy Hawaiian’s signature ‘Hawaii Flies With Us’ onboard service celebrating the culture, natural beauty, people, and Aloha Spirit of Hawaii, including complimentary hot meals for all passengers.

Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu gave a hula performance at Pershing Square this past Thursday as part of Hawaiian Airlines’ presentation of free concerts by headlining Hawaii entertainers in New York City during June. This Thursday, June 28, the renowned Brothers Cazimero will perform at Pershing Square.
