Details relating to cruise passengers’ nationalities and what is communicated to passengers in musters and emergency situations have been outlined in two new safety policies adopted by the global cruise industry this week.
The Common Elements of Musters and Emergency Instructions policy prescribes 12 common elements to be communicated to cruise passengers, including a description of key safety features and an explanation of emergency routing systems.
The adoption of this policy “will provide our guests with the confidence that they are receiving the same key safety messages no matter which ship they cruise”, the European Cruise Council chairman Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio said.
Under the Nationality of Passengers policy, each cruise passenger’s nationality will be recorded and made available to search and rescue personnel as required.
The ECC and the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) advised the new policies exceed current international regulatory requirements and have come out of January’s Cruise Industry Operational Safety Review.
According to CLIA president and chief executive Christine Duffy, the industry is taking a "holistic look" at safety with the new policies just some of the many that have been developed and adopted as part of the Review.
