In a sign of the effective operational relationship between Sydney Ports Corporation and Carnival Australia, Corporation staff were today welcomed onboard P&O Cruises’ Pacific Pearl in Sydney for a close up view of the cruise industry.

The visit was an opportunity for staff from across the Corporation to be on board during Pacific Pearl’s turnaround, described by Carnival Australia CEO Ann Sherry as “an amazingly complex choreography” of logistics and supply chain.

In welcoming the Sydney Ports team, Ms Sherry said the Corporation and Carnival Australia – which operates a combined fleet of P&O Cruises and Princess Cruises ships and soon Carnival Spirit – shared a proud maritime heritage.

“Just by being in Sydney we are at the hub of the world’s fastest growing cruise market and the gateway to every other cruise destination in Australia,” Ms Sherry said.

The Sydney Ports Corporation team was onboard during Pacific Pearl’s turnaround which involved:

  • Disembarking 2000 returning passengers and embarking another 2000 for Pacific Pearl’s next cruise, a three-night short break
  • Taking on around 250 pallets or the equivalent of ten to fifteen semi-trailer loads of food and beverage and other supplies
  • Safely transferring six to eight tonnes of garbage and around 3000 litres of liquid waste from the ship
  • Taking on around 700 tonnes of fuel in bunkering operations
  • Accommodating passengers equivalent in number to four fully laden A380 planes.

In her presentation, held in Pacific Pearl’s Marquee showroom, Ms Sherry particularly thanked the Sydney Ports team for their efforts in improving cruise ship access to the Overseas Passenger Terminal.

“We are on the same page in understanding the value of the growing cruise industry and the contribution it makes to the wider economy,” Ms Sherry said.
